Achenla Jamir from Akamen Kiyong, a small colony from Mokokchung Village situated 2.2 km from Mokokchung Town, shared the preparations underway for the European Cup 2024 and Copa America 2024 in their village. Akamen is the smallest among the 12 colonies in the village, but it shows a big heart when it comes to celebrating football.

Our colony enjoys football festivities like the World Cup, European Cup, and Copa America by coming together to support their respective teams, shares Jamir. Although the European Cup starts at midnight in the state, Jamir mentions that they have hoisted the flags of the countries they support the most. Germany and Spain, popular among the children, are prominently displayed, while Argentina has a strong following among women of all ages, she added.

On June 13, 2024, one of their members sponsored the work of hoisting the team flags along the colony’s pathways, visible to everyone, followed by a communal dinner. Jamir noted that they gather in houses to watch the games on television, stating, “Watching football on television with the football fans hits differently.”

Like many in Nagaland, Football is a beloved sport in Akamen Kiyong, uniting people of all ages and backgrounds. Every year, the colony also organizes the hoisting of flags for major football tournaments.

“The shared passion for the game creates a sense of community and strengthens bonds among our residents. Victories of our favorite teams are celebrated collectively,” remarks Jamir.
