ASER 2024: 82.7% of students aged 14-16 in rural Nagaland can use smart phone; only 40.3% can do basic arithmetic

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 was released today in New Delhi, by co-founders of Pratham Dr. Madhav Chavan and Farida Lambay. This is the fourteenth ‘basic’ ASER report.

In Nagaland, ASER 2024 reached to 10,056 children in 329 villages across 11 districts (2011 census) in Nagaland. 8 DIETs across 8 districts, 2 government colleges namely, Kohima Science College (Autonomous) Jotsoma and Zisaji Presidency College, Kiphire and Local volunteers from 2 districts conducted the survey.

The survey has revealed stark trends and challenges for the state of Nagaland where 82.7 percent of students aged 14-16 in rural Nagaland are apt in using smart phone to do digital tasks but only 40.3 percent in Class VIII can do basic arithmetic such as division in both government and private schools.

In terms of reading assessment, the survey indicates that only 49.2 percent of students in Std V can read Std II level texts in rural Nagaland.

In Arithmetic assessment, 37.9% of students in Std III can do atleast substraction. This is a decline from 2016, where 42.8% were skilled in substraction.

Other trends include, only 44.8% of schools served mid day meal on the day of visit, while 44.1% of schools had no drinking facilities. 27.9% had no toilet facilities for girls. 25.9% of schools did not have libraries while 42.7% had libraries but no books used by children on day of visit.

The ‘basic’ ASER survey generates district, state and national level estimates of the enrolment status of 3 – 16-year-old children, and basic reading and arithmetic skills of 5 to 16-year-old children. Additionally, in ASER 2024, older children age 14 to 16 were asked questions about their digital access and usage and were administered a set of smartphone-based tasks to gauge their digital abilities.

ASER 2024 reached 649,491 children in 17,997 villages across 605 rural districts in India. Facilitated by Pratham, in each survey district, a local organisation or institution conducted the survey.
