The district administrations of Karbi Anglong, Assam, and Dimapur, Nagaland, on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and strengthening coordination along the Assam–Nagaland border during a coordination meeting held at the Circuit House, Dimapur.
The Assam delegation was led by Deputy Commissioner Aranyak Saikia, IAS, accompanied by senior civil and police officials, while officials from the Dimapur district administration and police represented Nagaland, according to a DIPR update.
The meeting focused on enhancing communication and cooperation between the two district administrations to ensure that any emerging issues along the inter-state border are addressed promptly, peacefully and through mutual consultation.
At the outset, both sides acknowledged the cordial relationship that has been maintained over the years and appreciated the prompt response of the police forces of both states whenever incidents occurred in the border areas. Officials noted that timely coordination between the administrations and law enforcement agencies has helped prevent the escalation of disputes and ensured the safety and security of residents living in border villages.
During the meeting, revenue officials from Assam presented the historical and administrative background of the disputed areas, citing district boundary notifications, revenue records and census documents. They maintained that the villages concerned have long formed part of Assam’s notified administrative jurisdiction and have been included in electoral rolls and census operations for several decades.

Despite the differing territorial claims, both administrations agreed that preserving peace on the ground must remain the immediate priority. Officials stressed that regular dialogue, people-to-people contact and mutual trust are essential for preventing misunderstandings and resolving local issues before they develop into larger disputes.
To strengthen confidence-building measures, the meeting proposed the constitution of a joint border monitoring committee comprising district officials, police personnel and representatives of the concerned border villages. The proposed committee would monitor developments in the border areas, respond jointly to incidents, facilitate dialogue between affected communities and help maintain the existing status quo until a final settlement is reached by the appropriate authorities.
Both sides also agreed that future visits to sensitive border locations should, as far as possible, be undertaken jointly by the administrations and police of both states to promote transparency, avoid misunderstandings and reinforce cooperation at the ground level.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to sustained dialogue, coordinated action and peaceful coexistence. Officials from both states agreed that regular communication, close coordination between district administrations and law enforcement agencies, and continued cooperation remain the most effective means of preserving harmony and maintaining law and order along the Assam–Nagaland border.
