An awareness programme on Rain Water Harvesting and Water Conservation was organised by Longleng Town Council under the nationwide Jal Sanchay Jal Bhagidari (JSJB) campaign, on the theme ” Catch the Rain.” The programme aimed to create on the importance of rainwater harvesting, water conservation and community participation in sustainable water management on August 3 at DC’s Conference Hall, Longleng.
The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Additional Deputy Commissioner Longleng, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, NCS, who also chaired the programme and briefly highlighted on rain water harvesting and water conservation.
Resource person, Junior Engineer PHED, Er L Baukham Phom, highlighted the importance of practicing rainwater harvesting, with special emphasis on water-stressed districts such as Longleng, where a large section of the population depends on rainwater and spring sources for their water needs.
He elaborated on the major causes of water scarcity in the district, including hilltop settlements, drying springs, depletion of water sources during the winter season, climate variability, and inadequate rainwater storage facilities. He stressed that these challenges require collective efforts and sustainable water management practices.

He encouraged the gathering to store and conserve rainwater during the monsoon season and to properly maintain local water bodies to ensure water availability throughout the year. He also emphasized the need to increase forest cover, prevent deforestation, and implement water conservation measures such as spring-shed management and the construction of check dams to enhance groundwater recharge and protect water sources.
Further, he urged every citizen to play an active role in water conservation by installing rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, keeping drains clean, planting trees, protecting local water bodies, and adopting responsible water-use practices. He emphasized that community participation is essential for achieving long-term water security and sustainable development.
