CM extends greetings on the occasion of National Sports Day

Kohima: The National Sports Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand and comes after the recently concluded Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games 2022

Extending his greeting on the occasion of National Sports Day, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio mentioned in his message, “Today is the Day when tributes are made to all the sportsmen and women of the State for bringing laurels to the State, and a Day to encourage about the importance of Sports and being physically active in daily life.”
In his message, Rio further added, “Nagas have proven that sports is a part and parcel of life, and Sports is taken up seriously as a profession as evident from the recently concluded Nagaland Olympics and Paralympics Games-cum-Inter District Tournaments, where many medals were won, and promising athletes identified.”

The National Sports Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, known as ‘The Wizard’ for his skills and goal scoring abilities. Chand was known for having scored over 400 goals in a career spanning over two decades. Chand also earned three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He was awarded the third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan in 1956 by the Government of India.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi also shared a message and paid tribute to the hockey legend. “Greetings on National Sports Day and tributes to Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary. The recent years have been great for sports. May this trend continue. May sports keep gaining popularity across India,” tweeted Modi.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as part of the FIT India Movement is also encouraging Schools, Colleges, Ministries, Government and Private Organizations to participate in a grand manner by encouraging students and employees to take part in sports/fitness activities for at least one hour.
