The Congress Party on Tuesday announced its first guarantee if voted to power in the upcoming Parliamentary elections. During a public rally in Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi declared that the party will guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers in the country as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission.

Later, Gandhi posted on X that it is a historic day and asserted that this step will change the lives of 15 crore farmer families by ensuring their prosperity. “This is the first guarantee of Congress on the path of justice,” he said.

This guarantee comes amid the Delhi Chalo protest called by several farmer unions from Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh who are demanding for a law that guarantees MSP among others. As the farmers march to New Delhi, the National Capital has been barricaded. The use of tear gas on farmers have also been reported on Tuesday.

Condemning this action of the Central Government, the Congress Party has said that “to suppress the voice of farmers, the BJP government has converted the country’s capital Delhi into a ‘police cantonment’, as if an enemy has attacked the power in Delhi.”

Addressing a press conference, INC General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala stated that the 10-year tenure of Modi government will be known as the period of cruelty, barbarity, repression and oppression against farmers.
