TTC Infra India Pvt Ltd, the contractor undertaking the road widening project from Km 72.4 to Km 83.00 on National Highway 2 (Previously NH-61) within Wokha district, has officially agreed to resume work after intense negotiations and assurances with authorities in the district.

However, the contractor has cautioned that any “hindrances” during the execution of the work will compel it to terminate the contract without further notice.

TTC Infra had earlier pointed out issues of unsafe working environment and obstructions on daily basis at the work sites while stating its intention to abandon the project.

Taking note of the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha’s assurance “to provide conducive and safe working atmosphere for the construction workers and also committed to extend all necessary support to take security measures to ensure safe working environment,” the contractor announced its decision to withhold its plan to end the contract.

“… we shall be re-mobilizing our work force to complete the balance work as per the TCS and scope of work stipulated in the contract,” TTC Infra said on Thursday.

The deadline given by the Lotha civil society organisations (CSOs) to the authorities to resume work on the road ends at midnight on 17th February 2024. The organisations, spearheaded by the Lotha Hoho and Joint Action Committee, have made it clear that it would re-impose the bandh in the district if the issues are not resolved as per its demands.

Displeased with the execution of the work, the CSOs had called for an indefinite bandh on NH 2 in the district which further intensified into a total bandh. The bandh was suspended after five days after an appeal was made by the Lotha legislators. However, the CSOs had asserted that “The total bandh is subject to re-imposition”.

Meanwhile, a “mop up exercise” is underway in the district to remove structures on land along NH 2 that have been compensated for.
