The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has reaffirmed its opposition to the compulsory singing or playing of the revised Indian National Song, Vande Mataram, during official functions and educational programmes.

In a statement issued with reference to the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) notification of August 12 and reiterating its earlier notification of March 13, 2026, the CSU said it has no objection to the celebration of India’s Independence Day, the National Flag, the National Anthem or other national symbols.

However, the Union maintained that no student should be compelled to participate in any religiously or culturally sensitive expression that conflicts with his or her conscience and beliefs.

Accordingly, the CSU directed all its affiliated units and subordinate bodies to ensure that schools and educational institutions under their respective jurisdictions do not send students to participate in the August 15 Independence Day programmes where compulsory singing or playing of Vande Mataram is imposed.

The directive will remain in force until the order mandating compulsory observance of Vande Mataram is revoked or withdrawn by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the CSU stated.

The Union further directed that any instance of coercion, intimidation, discrimination or disciplinary action against students for exercising their right to refrain from such participation should be immediately reported to the CSU office.

The CSU said respect for the nation and constitutional values must go hand in hand with respect for individual conscience, religious freedom, diversity and the dignity of every student. It also called upon its affiliated units and subordinate bodies to remain vigilant and united in safeguarding the rights and interests of students.
