The District Congress Committees (DCCs) of Dimapur, Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Longleng, Noklak and Tuensang held protests across their respective districts on Monday against what the Congress has described as the alleged “high-handedness and arbitrary functioning” of Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
The protests were organised as part of the nationwide programme of the Indian National Congress calling for accountability in the functioning of the Election Commission of India and raising serious concerns over decisions relating to electoral rolls and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The Congress has demanded the immediate resignation and removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, along with an independent review of decisions and electoral-roll changes taken under his tenure.
The Nagaland DCCs expressed grave concern over what they described as actions that could undermine public confidence in the independence, transparency and credibility of the electoral process.

The District Congress Committees stated that the right to vote is a fundamental pillar of India’s democratic system and that every electoral process must be conducted with complete transparency, impartiality and accountability.
The Congress further reiterated that no individual holding constitutional office should be above scrutiny or the law. Any allegation of wrongdoing must be examined through legally established process, and responsibility must be fixed wherever violations are established.
The protests in Nagaland form part of the wider Congress mobilisation against the CEC. Similar demonstrations were held in several parts of the country on September 25, with Congress workers demanding the CEC’s resignation, removal and arrest.
The District Congress Committees of Dimapur, Mokokchung, Wokha, Peren, Longleng, Noklak and Tuensang reaffirmed their commitment to protecting democratic institutions, safeguarding the voting rights of citizens and ensuring that the electoral process remains free, fair, transparent and accountable.
