Development of Northeast is development of India: Dr L Murugan reviews progress in Kolasib

Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr L Murugan  visited Kolasib District on June 3 as part of his official tour to Mizoram. During the visit, he held an interactive session with representatives of various NGOs and reviewed the progress of developmental works being implemented in the district at the DC Conference Hall. The review meeting was attended by H Dolianbuaia, Deputy Commissioner, Kolasib and the Heads of Offices from various departments.

Addressing the gathering, Dr L Murugan stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government give high priority to the development of the Northeast.

Quoting the Prime Minister, he said, “The development of the North East is the development of India”. He noted that substantial effort are being undertaken to strengthen road connectivity and infrastructure to improve the quality of life of the people in the region.

The Minister appreciated the dedicated efforts of government officials and NGO representatives in serving the people and contributing to the district’s development.

He expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved in the fields of sports and women empowerment. Highlighting improvements in connectivity, Dr Murugan noted that the Bairabi–Sairang railway line has become operational and that the Rajdhani Express is now running between Delhi and Sairang. He said the enhanced connectivity has significantly boosted tourism in Mizoram and increased the inflow of visitors from other parts of the country.

The Minister emphasized that the Government of Mizoram, the Government of India, and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) are working in close coordination to accelerate development in the state. He stated that the Central Government’s continued support has enabled rapid progress across various sectors.

Dr Murugan also expressed happiness over the participation of Mizo filmmakers in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa, and other national platforms. He said efforts would be made to encourage leading filmmakers to explore Mizoram as a filming destination, given its scenic beauty and tourism potential. He added that the Government remains committed to promoting both tourism and cinema as important sectors for growth and employment generation.

Calling for greater public participation in national initiatives, the Minister urged stakeholders to actively support the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at promoting rooftop solar energy adoption.

On education, Dr Murugan stressed the importance of primary education as the foundation of learning and development. Expressing concern over student dropout rates, he called for concerted efforts by parents, teachers, and the community to encourage children to continue their education.

The Minister also appealed to all stakeholders to contribute wholeheartedly towards realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, which aims to transform India into a fully developed nation by the centenary of its independence.
