The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) on Sunday stated that the public of Eastern Nagaland shall demand resignation of the 20 incumbent legislators of Eastern Nagaland region from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) and all central and regional political party workers in the event of no early response from the Government of India (GoI) to the demand for ‘Separate Statehood’ by the people of Eastern Nagaland under the aegis of ENPO.
This decision was adopted in a crucial Central Executive Council (CEC) meeting held on 14 October at its headquarters in Tuensang. During the CEC meeting, the organization adopted two resolutions and also reaffirmed their earlier resolutions.
Following the demand of the resignation, “an effective plan of action for furthering the movement will be worked out through the emergency ENPO-CEC meeting,” stated the organisation.
The house has also unanimously resolved to abstain from participating in the State Hornbill Festival in Kisama from this year onwards. According to the ENPO, the decision was taken in consideration of the hardships faced by participants from the Eastern Nagaland region every year.
The organisation, however, stated: “The State Govt. shall be requested through the Eastern Nagaland Legislators Union (ENLU) to promote the Mini Hornbill Festival of the respective tribes.”
The ENPO said that it reaffirms and strongly upholds the 18 December 2007 Tuensang Summit ENPO Resolution, which states that “there should be no bloodshed, threat, intimidation or any form of violence within Eastern Nagaland jurisdiction. The public of ENPO shall not extend any public co-operation to any group(s) for non compliance of the above.”
The house further reaffirmed the 26 August 2022 Resolution, wherein the Eastern people will abstain from participating in any state or central election until and unless a Separate Statehood is granted by the Government of India.
The crucial CEC meet was convened in the backdrop of a mass movement by the people of Eastern Nagaland that began from August of this year.
A mass public rally was held on 9 August in all the seven tribal headquarters of Eastern Nagaland. Then on 26 August, a resolution was adopted wherein the organisation decided not to participate in any central and state election process until and unless the statehood demand was fulfilled by the GoI. The movement was further intensified by the ENSF which organized a mass public walkathon in support of the 26 August resolution across Eastern Nagaland on 7 October.
