The Red Cross Committee (RCC) at Phek Government College (PGC) conducted a “First Aid Workshop cum Orientation of Youth Red Cross” event in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Phek Branch on 21st March 2025 within the college premises.
The event was led by Dzuthono Vero, a B.A. student in her 4th Semester as the chairperson. Dziesetuonuo Linyü, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Convenor of RCC, presented the welcome address.
Neizote Venuh, Honorary Secretary of IRCS, Phek Branch, served as the keynote speaker. He provided a brief overview of the objectives of IRCS and the Youth Red Cross (YRC), encouraging students to join the YRC to participate in humanitarian efforts in their community.
The workshop’s resource person was Dr. Zhose Vero, a Medical Officer at Phek District Hospital. He conducted a session on the theme, “Demonstration of Some Basic First Aid Techniques.” Dr. Vero discussed the definition of first aid as the initial assistance given to a victim or an ill individual for any injury or sudden health crisis before professional medical help arrives, with the goals of saving life, preventing further medical deterioration, facilitating safe transport to healthcare services, and promoting recovery. He emphasized ethical considerations in first aid, such as obtaining consent from the affected individual and maintaining their privacy.

Dr. Vero elaborated on how to handle emergencies by assessing personal safety and the condition of the individual (awareness, injuries), calling for assistance (immediate or delayed, direct or indirect) and administering first aid.
Dr. Vero described methods to assess a person’s responsiveness and consciousness. He demonstrated the recovery position for individuals who are unconscious but still breathing. Additionally, he explained and demonstrated the CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) technique for those who are unresponsive and lack a normal pulse or breathing. He covered first aid methods for situations involving choking, drowning, suffocation from smoke or gases, chest discomfort or pain, bleeding or wounds, shock, traffic accidents (including fractures and head injuries), strokes, animal bites or stings, and burn injuries.
The students actively engaged in the workshop and participated in the CPR and Recovery Position demonstrations. A number of students registered with the Youth Red Cross (YRC), to volunteer for humanitarian causes.The vote of thanks was given by Vilhoutuonuo Theünuo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences.
