A briefing session with the Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) was held to review the disaster situation in Nagaland arising from the ongoing monsoon at Noune Resort, Chümoukedima on August 11. The Inter-Ministerial Central Team comprised of M. Ramachandrudu, IAS, Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs; Sanjeev Kumar Suman, Director; Pankaj Pahadia, Deputy Director (FCD); Pradeep Kumar Meena, Executive Engineer; Rajeshwari S. Mallegeowda, Director (DoRD) and Priyom Roy, Scientist ‘SF’.
Delivering the keynote address, Advisor, NSDMA, Z Nyusiethio Nyuthe, stated that Nagaland has witnessed severe and recurring flood events since July 19, with another major spell reported on August 3, causing widespread disruption and affecting communities across several districts.
He stated that 11 lives were lost in one district, describing the incident as an unprecedented tragedy for the State. Several districts and pockets remained cut off for more than a week due to damage to roads and difficult terrain, necessitating aerial supply of essential food items and relief materials.
Highlighting Nagaland’s geographical and climatic vulnerability, the Advisor said the State’s hilly terrain and highly variable rainfall make several areas particularly susceptible to isolation during periods of heavy rainfall. He also noted that the unusual spatial variation in rainfall this year had resulted in severe flooding in some areas, while others remained comparatively dry, affecting agriculture and livelihoods.

Nyuthe acknowledged the coordinated response of the State and Union Governments, including the constitution of Inter-Ministerial Central Teams to assess the damage and requirements. He also appreciated the field visits undertaken by the Chief Minister and representatives of the Union Government, stating that such visits had boosted the morale of the affected communities.
The Advisor expressed hope that the ongoing field assessments would help convey the extent of the damage and suffering and facilitate further assistance for relief and recovery.
An overview of the disaster situation during the 2026 monsoon period was presented by Dr. Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA.
During the programme, the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) of Mon, Mokokchung, Longleng and Tuensang made presentations on the disaster situation and preparedness measures in their respective districts.
A presentation was also made by the Water Resources Department, followed by an interaction session with the IMCT.
M Ramachandrudu, IAS, Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs, also delivered remarks on behalf of the Inter-Ministerial Central Team. The programme was chaired by Jonjibemo Odyuo, Assistant Manager (Relief, Recovery & Mitigation), NSDMA while Sentiwapang Aier, Secretary, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), delivered the welcome address.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Khrolou Koza Lohe, Assistant Manager (Training & Education), NSDMA.
