The Wokha District NASHA MUKT Bharat Abhiyan organised International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held with ADC, Wokha, K. Furhesie Nyuwi as the Special Guest on 1st July 2024 at Lotha Hoho Ki, Wokha, DIPR has informed.
Addressing on the occasion, Nyuwi said that drug abuse is a social problem and it has taken generations away from us, it leads to a detrimental impact on the society leading to increase in crime rate apart from affecting the financial stability and also increases conflicts and causes untold emotional pain for every member of the family. He also said that most addicts being in the productive age of 18 to 35 years, the loss in terms of human potential is incalculable.
Stressing on the strategy to fight abuse effectively, the ADC said supply reduction through community policing by informing enforcing agencies of the movement of drugs, effective coordination amongst enforcement agencies, creating awareness among citizens, mass campaign involving community participation, requires more de-addiction centres through committed NGOs.
Nyuwi further said to address the root cause of drug addiction and implementing effective prevention and treatment programmes are vital in reducing demand and weakening the drug trade. Let us strengthen the family values, have proper monitoring of schools and colleges, focus on skilling the youths and divert their attention to positive outputs, are some of the ways forward to reduce the menace of drugs in our society, and appealed to join hands in our fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Speaking on the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention”, Assistant Director, Kripa Foundation, Kychamo P Ezung, said that the day emphasizes on the importance of having effective drug policies which need to be grounded on science, research, compassion and full respect for human rights. The significance of World Drug Day lies in the ability to raise awareness about the severe consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking. These issues not only destroy lives but also disrupt communities, fuel crime and weaken economies, Ezung added.
He also said, holistic drug prevention policies need to be developed at the state and district level to empower youth and equipped them with knowledge, skills and resources to say “no to drug” and become agents of change in their communities advocating for drug prevention initiatives and amplifying their voices in the conversation. Together, let us amplify our efforts to combat the global drug problem, guided by the principals of science, compassion and solidarity through collective action and commitment to evidence based solution and create a world where individuals are empowered to lead healthy lives, Assistant Director of Kripa Foundation.
During the programme short speeches were also delivered by, Addl. SP Wokha K. Soriso, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Zuben Kikon and Sr. SDEO Minthunglo Ngullie.
