Kohima Science College has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first government college from Nagaland to be selected under the STAR College Scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The announcement was made on April 16, 2026.

The college had initially submitted its proposal in March 2025 and was later shortlisted among 34 institutions nationwide. The final proposal was made at the DBT headquarters in New Delhi on March 10, 2026 by Coordinator, Dr Vethselo Doulo along with core committee member, Along Longchari. Each year, only 10 to 15 colleges across the country are selected under this prestigious scheme.

Under this scheme, eight departments of the college—Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology—will receive grants from the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. These funds will primarily be utilized to strengthen laboratory infrastructure, procure advanced scientific equipment and enhance capacity-building initiatives through workshops, seminars and training programmes for undergraduate students, faculty members and the wider community.
