The Kohima Village Students Union (KVSU) organized a celebration of the 52nd World Environment Day featuring an exhibition of innovative models. The event, held at Kohima Village Council, carried this year’s theme “Ending Plastic Pollution.”

Guest speaker at the programme, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) councillor Thenusou Sekhose Yhome in her address commended KVSU for initiating the interschool competition focused on developing innovative solutions to combat plastic pollution.

“This demonstrates that Kohima’s future rests in creative and innovative hands,” she remarked.

The speaker stressed that World Environment Day serves as an important reminder that there is just one Earth. She noted that even small daily actions and personal decisions collectively make a substantial environmental impact.

Yhome shared that the KMC maintains active collaboration with multiple stakeholders to ensure city cleanliness. With waste management as its core focus, the civic body has undertaken significant projects across various locations to transform waste into valuable materials, she said.

“Proper waste disposal is every citizen’s fundamental duty,” she emphasized. Recognizing sanitation staff as the town’s backbone, the councillor appealed for greater public respect and appreciation of their essential work.

Addressing the plastic crisis, she called for immediate measures, advising against single-use plastics while promoting reuse and recycling practices.

“Each individual must be accountable for managing their own waste responsibly,” she urged.
