Kumlong Ward emerged as the undisputed champions, claiming victory in a sensational finale that exemplified the spirit of fair play and unity.
Under the esteemed patronage of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association, the tournament drew participants from various wards, culminating in a thrilling showdown that showcased the profound impact of sports on communities. The distinguished Guest of Honour, Imlikokba Lkr, District Planning Officer, Mokokchung, Government of Nagaland, graced the event’s closing ceremony, lauding the dedicated efforts of the organizing committee in orchestrating this landmark tournament.

In his address, the Guest of Honour underscored the tournament’s pivotal role in nurturing emerging talent and fostering bonds among players from diverse wards. He emphasized the significance of unity, understanding, and relationships cultivated through such spirited competitions. Encouraging both victors and those who fell short, he urged them to harness their skills and return stronger in the upcoming year.
The tournament’s climax witnessed an inspiring speech by the Guest of Honour, rallying the finalist teams – Kumlong and Artang – to compete with unwavering sportsmanship and determination. The essence of fair play, teamwork, and mutual respect were highlighted as fundamental pillars of the game.
The gripping final match saw Kumlong and Artang engage in a fierce clash. While Artang claimed the first set with a score of 25-19, Kumlong’s tenacious spirit shone through, enabling them to secure victories in the subsequent sets with scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-22. Notable contributions from players such as Sademmeren and Reshitemjen played a crucial role in Kumlong’s triumphant journey.
Kumlong Ward emerged as the crowned champions, hoisting the coveted trophy, certificates, and a substantial cash prize of Rs 30,000. Artang, displaying commendable resilience, secured the runners-up position for the second consecutive year, earning a well-deserved prize of Rs 20,000 along with trophy and certificates.
Individual excellence was also celebrated as Reshitemjen from Kumlong was honoured as the player of the tournament, while Sademmeren from Kumlong was recognized as the best spiker. Limatenzuk from Yimyu showcased exceptional skills as the best setter. The tournament also featured a super spiker contest in which two spikers from each team participated. In the contest, Akumnuchet from Yimyu emerged as the victor.
Earlier in the day, the first semi-final clash of the 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament between Artang and Yimyu kept spectators on the edge of their seats. In a gripping best-of-five encounter, the youthful Yimyu squad demonstrated their mettle by clinching the initial set 25-23, with Imlionen leading their charge. However, Artang staged a spectacular turnaround in the second set, securing a 25-19 victory. The subsequent sets showcased Artang’s experience as they successfully held off the spirited Yimyu team, triumphing in the third and fourth sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-10, respectively.
The momentum continued in the second semi-final, where defending champions Sungkomen faced off against the host team Kumlong. The opening set saw Kumlong seize control with a 25-21 win, propelled by the contributions of Reshitemjen and Tsuknungtemjen. In the second set, Kumlong’s prowess, led by the spiking dominance of Sademmeren and the experience of Reshitemjen, secured a 25-20 victory. Sungkomen, determined to uphold their defending champion status, displayed their resilience in the third set by making a comeback and snatching a 25-20 win. However, Kumlong’s unyielding spirit proved insurmountable, propelling them to a 25-21 triumph in the fourth set, securing their place in the grand finale.
As the echoes of cheers and applause reverberated across the venue, the 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament etched its mark as an event that transcended competition.
