The Lhisemia Khel of Kohima Village celebrated their 175th anniversary of amalgamation at the NBCC Convention Centre in Kohima on 4 January 2025, under the theme “Upholding Our Heritage”. Special Guest on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister and in charge of Home and Border Affairs Minister Yanthungo Patton, emphasized the significance of this remarkable occasion in his speech.
He noted that celebrating a 175th anniversary is a rare milestone for any organization, association, or council in the region. Patton expressed admiration for the vision and wisdom of the forefathers, who, back in 1850, desired to live together without distinctions among themselves. He hailed the visionary leaders of those times who initiated the merging of the three khels together as ‘Lhisemia’ following a traditional ritual for bondage and from which the Lhisemia Khel has grown thus far.
Patton called upon all to remember and appreciate the legacy of love and affection, feeling of oneness, sense of unity to stand strong against any circumstances, the brotherly relationships with neighbourhoods near and far that our visionary forefathers have left for us and we are celebrating today.
Noting that the Naga society, both above and below ground, is deeply fragmented and shattered, placing us at a critical crossroads, the Deputy CM emphasized the necessity of a strong and cohesive society for the growth and progress of the state, as well as for future generations.
It was an honour to join the people of L Khel today in Kohima to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Lhisemia Kethinuokelie, together with Hon’ble Advisor Dr. Kekhrie Yhome, Hon’ble MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, Hon’ble Advisor Mr. @jamirpangjung66 Jamir, KLH Chairman Mr. KN… pic.twitter.com/6hQBw99SO3

In his speech, Y Patton also pointed out that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had established an opposition-less government, uniting all sixty elected MLAs under one umbrella, regardless of their political affiliations. This initiative aims to foster unity within Naga society and to find a lasting solution to the long-standing Naga political issue, he said.
He acknowledged that while adversaries may raise various allegations against the opposition-less government, it was formed with noble intentions, aimed at promoting good governance rather than misrule.
Patton noted that during the early days of the Naga political movement, particularly under the respected late A.Z. Phizo, there were no factions or divisions, and the entire Naga society was united. There was no illegal taxation or extortion, and the Naga freedom fighters were respected by all citizens for their dedicated commitment to the true spirit of the Naga Freedom Movement for self-determination.
However, he regretted that the political movement has now splintered into approximately 28 factions, leading to a fragmented governance that is plagued by illegal taxation and extortion which has made it increasingly difficult for the Naga people to pursue progressive and sustainable activities. Further, he stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is willing to provide a solution for the Naga issue, but unity among the Naga factions is essential to achieve this. He emphasized that the Government of India is prepared to offer a single solution for the entire Naga society, rather than multiple solutions for individual factions.
Patton clarified that he is not against factions that are genuinely negotiating with the Government of India to reach a final resolution, but noted that many factions are either engaged in extortion or pursuing their own interests. He urged all Naga underground factions to unite and collaborate in efforts to achieve a permanent Naga political solution, provided they are sincerely committed to the welfare of the Naga people.
He appealed to everyone to promote the message of peace and unity among the Naga society, regardless of tribe, clan, or region, to ensure progress and prosperity for the state and future generations.
The Deputy CM said that we are living in a more diverse and interconnected society, urging everyone to teach their children about their cultural heritage, values, and traditions. This exposure will help them appreciate the rich cultures of other tribes, fostering understanding and creating the cohesive society that is essential as we celebrate this anniversary under the theme “Upholding our Heritage.”
He noted that Kohima Village, as the traditional landowners of Kohima Town, the State Capital, has a significant role to play. They can act as catalysts for community cohesion among the Nagas and others residing in Kohima. He acknowledged that they have steadfastly supported the government in challenging times and expressed hope that they will continue to contribute positively to the welfare of Naga society in the future.
