The advance security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh was reportedly ambushed on Monday while it was on its way to Jiribam district. The convoy was said to heading to the violence struck district to make preparations for CM’s visit on 11th June 2024.
Suspected militants attacked the convoy at T Laijang near Kotlen in Kangpokpi district on NH 37 Jiribam road at around 10.30 am. T Laijang is around 200 km away from Jiribam which is in the border of Manipur and Assam.
One security person was injured in the incident.
The tense situation in Jiribam district broke out after a resident, Soibam Sarat Singh (65) was murdered by unidentified miscreants on 6th June 2024. Manipur Police has said on 8th June that since then several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities has been burnt down along with two police pickets and Borobekra Forest Beat Office.
The Police has also informed that Additional Security Forces (Central and State Forces) had been deployed to control the situation in the affected areas and prevent further escalation. “Situation is tense but under control at present,” it stated.
As a result of the violence, hundreds of people from Jiribam are said to have fled to the Cachar Hills in Assam seeking refuge.
