Massive fire engulfs sawmill in Mokokchung village; properties worth Rs 2 Crore destroyed

A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of April 4 at Tsüsapang Sector of Mokokchung, opposite Chuchuyimpang Village Gate. The blaze completely gutted the facility, which was fully stocked with lumber and logs awaiting processing, destroying property estimated to be worth Rs 2 crores. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

According to Keleseho Stephen Tsukru, Officer-in-Charge of the Fire Department, Mokokchung, the fire call was received at 1:36 a.m. Two fire tenders from the North Fire Station and one from the South were immediately dispatched to the scene. The operation to contain and extinguish the blaze lasted nearly eight hours and required approximately 15 water refills.

Assam Rifles, local police, and water tankers, along with public volunteers, provided crucial assistance in the firefighting efforts. Their timely intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent areas.

The fire destroyed large quantities of timber, machinery, and other equipment. No casualties were reported, but the owner identified as Tajungnukshi estimated that stock worth around ₹2 crore was destroyed. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and remains under investigation.

Mill owner Tajungnukshi informed that as soon as the fire broke out, the Fire and Emergency Services were immediately alerted. He also acknowledged the support and assistance extended by the District Administration, Fire and Emergency services, Assam Rifles, Chuchuyimpang Baptist Church, Alisüngkum Baptist Fellowship, Tsüsapang Sector Yimden, Tsüsapang Baptist Church, Kilengmen Union Mokokchung, Longpa Union Mokokchung, and all individuals who came forward to help.

Assam Rifles Mokokchung Battalion plays crucial role in controlling fire

In a daring display of heroism, the Assam Rifles personnel of Mokokchung Battalion played a crucial role in controlling the fire preventing widespread destruction and loss of life.

Responding swiftly to the distress call, a team of Assam Rifles personnel equipped with a water bowser and firefighting equipment, rushed to the scene to combat the raging inferno along with the Mokokchung fire brigade team and village volunteers. The troops also extended administrative support, assisting villagers in evacuating and providing first aid to those affected by the smoke and heat.

“The timely response of Assam Rifles was a blessing for us. Without their help, the damage would have been far worse,” said a relieved village elder, expressing gratitude for the soldiers’ bravery and dedication.
