The Department of English, MGM College, organised a Slam Poetry Competition on the theme “Poetry in Motion – Voices That Inspire” at the college auditorium on September 19, providing students a platform to showcase creativity, self-expression and appreciation of poetry.

The literary event was chaired by Thejavor Jordan Mepfuo of the Department of English, BA First Semester, and commenced with the opening cadence delivered by Ahikali I. Jakha, Head of the Department of English.

Guest of Honour Reji Abraham, Principal, MGM Higher Secondary School, in his special message highlighted the role of literature and poetry in nurturing creativity, imagination, critical thinking and effective self-expression among young learners.

He encouraged students to make use of literary platforms to articulate their thoughts, experiences, aspirations and perspectives.

The highlight of the programme was the Slam Poetry Competition, which saw enthusiastic participation from students. Participants presented their original poems with confidence, energy and creativity, reflecting diverse perspectives and contemporary concerns.

The competition provided students an opportunity to engage with poetry beyond the conventional classroom setting and express their individual voices.

Narion L Khuvung won the first prize, while Ethungbeni and Joimie Angpuh secured the second and third prizes respectively.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Christine Murry, Assistant Professor, Department of English, who expressed appreciation to the Guest of Honour, faculty members, students, participants and all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the event.

The competition reaffirmed the Department of English’s efforts to foster literary appreciation, creativity, confidence and freedom of expression while promoting a vibrant literary culture within the MGM College community.
