Mokokchung: MCCI extends solidarity with traders affected by fire at MMC Complex

Mokokchung: MCCI makes clarion call to all members of society and conscientious citizens to contribute financial assistance to affected traders

The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has extended solidarity with the traders affected by the massive blaze at Mokokchung Municipal Council Shopping Complex on Saturday night. Through a press release, MCCI acknowledged the “devastating impact this incident has had on their businesses and livelihoods” and also assured its unwavering support to its members at such unfortunate time.

Tsukti Longkumer, President of MCCI and General Secretary Limalenden Longkumer informed that the fire reportedly began around 9:00 pm and engulfed the first floor of the complex, completely destroying around 78 businesses while the rest of the shops in the complex have been affected by the heat and smoke leaving rendering their products no longer saleable. Although no injuries were reported, the financial losses are likely to be enormous, it added.

The association also appreciated the swift response of the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), firefighters, police, Assam Rifles, public/volunteers and all those who actively participated in dousing the fire. It stated that the prompt efforts prevented further escalation of the tragedy and showcased exceptional teamwork during this challenging time.

While awaiting the official investigation report on the cause of the fire, MCCI demanded the State government to take all steps to provide fair and expeditious compensation for the aggrieved traders to help them rebuild their businesses and lives. MCCI also made a clarion call to all members of the society and conscientious citizens to contribute financial assistance to the affected traders.

Further, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry also commended the Deputy Commissioner for taking proactive approach in convening an emergency meeting to assess the situation and chart a path forward.

The association, on Sunday, also submitted a representation to the DC with its demands for the authorities to consider, which include –

As such, we present the following demands for your:

1. Conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire and make the findings public.

2. Provide immediate relief and financial assistance to the affected traders.

3. Collaborate with MCCI and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive compensation plan, ensuring fair and timely reimbursement for losses incurred.

4. Prioritize and initiate immediate rehabilitation measures for the affected traders, including but not limited to:

– Temporary relocation assistance to help them resume business operations as soon as possible.

– Financial aid to support them in rebuilding their livelihoods.

– Streamlined processes for obtaining necessary permits and licenses to facilitate business continuity.

5. Implement stringent fire safety measures across the district to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
