Mokokchung Police have cautioned house owners, landlords and owners of commercial premises against knowingly allowing their properties to be used for the illegal sale, storage or distribution of liquor, amid intensified enforcement of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989.
In a notice issued by Senior Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo, landlords and property owners were advised to exercise vigilance over the use of rented premises and immediately inform the nearest police station, Excise authority, Ward authority or Village Council if they receive credible information about illegal liquor-related activities.
The notice stated that under the NLTP Act, owners or occupiers who knowingly permit their premises to be used for committing an offence under the Act may also face legal action.
It further warned that where an investigation establishes that a house owner, landlord, tenant or occupier knowingly permitted, facilitated or abetted the use of any premises for illegal sale, storage or distribution of liquor, appropriate action would be initiated under relevant provisions of the NLTP Act.

Mokokchung Police also warned that separate criminal cases would be registered and investigated under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and other applicable laws where the manufacture, storage, supply, sale or distribution of adulterated or spurious liquor results in serious injury or death.
Any owner, landlord, tenant, seller, supplier or other person found to have knowingly participated in or facilitated such activities would be proceeded against in accordance with law, subject to evidence gathered during investigation.
The police also appealed to Ward Unions, Village Councils and civil society organisations to disseminate the notice and extend full cooperation towards strict enforcement of prohibition and prevention of further loss of life in the district.
