Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, NCS, has directed all hotels and restaurants in Mon district to strictly comply with the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) guidelines regarding the levy of service charges.
According to the notification, establishments have been directed not to add service charges automatically or by default to customers’ bills. Service charges must also not be collected under any other name, including staff welfare charge, service fee, hospitality charge or any similar levy.
The establishments have further been directed not to compel consumers to pay service charges, as such payment is voluntary and at the discretion of the consumer. No restriction should be imposed on entry into or provision of services to a consumer based on their decision not to pay a service charge.

The notification also states that service charges should not be added to bills for the purpose of levying GST on the total amount.
All concerned establishments have been directed to ensure strict and immediate compliance with the guidelines.
The Assistant Controller, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Mon, has been tasked with monitoring and inspecting establishments and reporting instances of non-compliance for appropriate action under the applicable provisions.
