State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Tongpang L Jamir held a discussion with Dr Kenei Miachieo, IFS, Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, and Imkongnungsang, Deputy Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, on ensuring the accurate identification and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the upcoming Census exercise.
The meeting focused on ensuring that all 21 recognised types of disabilities are adequately covered during enumeration and that no person with disability is excluded or left uncounted.
The officials stressed the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to ensure that PwDs across Nagaland are properly identified and their information accurately recorded during the Census process.
A key issue discussed was the training and sensitisation of enumerators. It was emphasised that enumerators must be adequately trained to understand different types of disabilities and identify PwDs correctly, sensitively and with due respect for their dignity.
Jamir highlighted that accurate and comprehensive disability data is essential for effective planning, policy formulation, resource allocation and implementation of government schemes and programmes for Persons with Disabilities.

Dr Miachieo also underscored the importance of creating awareness among enumerators and ensuring that the Census exercise is conducted with sensitivity, dignity and respect for the rights of persons with disabilities.
The officials further discussed the need for closer coordination between the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and the Office of Census Operations, Nagaland on matters relating to disability identification and enumeration.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both offices of the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities and the Office of Census Operations, Nagaland to making the Census exercise more inclusive and ensuring that every person with disability is counted, recognised and appropriately represented in the Census data.
