Nagaland University study proposes AI framework for ethical governance and sustainability

A multi-institutional international study involving researchers from Nagaland University has proposed an integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance framework aimed at promoting ethical decision-making, transparency, environmental sustainability and organisational resilience in AI-enabled digital platforms.

The study argues that AI governance should go beyond regulating technology and instead serve as a strategic mechanism to strengthen stakeholder trust, improve organisational performance and integrate environmental sustainability into AI-driven decision-making.

As AI increasingly influences decision-making across sectors, including environmental management and sustainability, the researchers noted that concerns over transparency, accountability, fairness and public trust have assumed greater importance.

The study presents a comprehensive framework linking AI governance, ethical decision-making, organisational resilience and environmental sustainability within a single model. It seeks to provide organisations with a practical approach to adopting AI responsibly while balancing technological advancement with social and environmental responsibilities.

The researchers employed a mixed-methods approach involving 185 managers, sustainability officers, governance experts and AI specialists from organisations using AI-enabled environmental and digital platform systems.

The findings have been published in NESciences (Natural and Engineering Sciences), an interdisciplinary research journal, under DOI 10.28978/nesciences.261029.

The paper was co-authored by Dr Mohammed Shamsul Hoque, Professor of English and Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences, Southeast University, Dhaka; Dr R Vasanthan, Associate Professor, Department of English, Nagaland University; Dr Khriereizhünuo Dzüvichü, Associate Professor, Department of History, Central University of Tamil Nadu; Dr Olga Glukhova, Faculty of Linguistics and Journalism, Rostov State University of Economics, Russia; and Dr P Shanmuga Sundari, Assistant Professor, School of Computing, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu.

Highlighting the significance of interdisciplinary research on emerging technologies, Nagaland University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik said technological advancement must be guided by ethical principles, institutional accountability and long-term sustainability objectives.

He said the research highlighted the importance of governance mechanisms that promote social responsibility and environmental stewardship while enhancing organisational effectiveness. Such interdisciplinary and international collaborations, he added, reflect Nagaland University’s commitment to research excellence and engagement with contemporary global challenges.

Elaborating on the study, Dr R Vasanthan said AI has significant potential to transform organisations, but its responsible use requires more than technological regulation.

He said the proposed approach would help organisations deploy AI with greater transparency and accountability while protecting public interest and promoting ethical decision-making. The framework, he added, could benefit policymakers, industry leaders and researchers in developing responsible AI strategies that support sustainable development, strengthen stakeholder trust and promote ethical decision-making in AI-driven organisations.

The researchers said the framework could help promote responsible AI adoption, strengthen organisational resilience through effective AI governance, improve transparency and accountability, build stakeholder trust and support sustainable environmental management.

The study, they said, provides a practical foundation for aligning AI-driven innovation with ethical governance, environmental sustainability and long-term organisational resilience.
