The mandate of the electorates in Nagaland has given a clear picture as the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to return to power in the state of Nagaland for the second term as the alliance partners have secured a thumping majority, as counting of votes to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly polls concluded today.

The NDPP and BJP had contested on a pre-poll alliance of 2018 seat sharing formula of 40:20.

The NDPP party secured a total of 25 seats out of 40 which is seen as a huge progress compared to the 2018 elections where, it won only 18 seats. While it’s alliance partner BJP party bagged only 12 seats out of 20, the number of 2018 and 2023 remains the same for the Saffron party.

On the other hand, NCP has significantly performed well by winning 7 seats, the highest number of seats won in the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, the main opposition regional party Naga People’s Front (NPF) has won only two seats out of 20, raising many questions on the party credibility who had been in ruling for 15 years till 2018.

Mention maybe made that NPF had emerged as the single largest party in 2018 elections wherein, it had won 26 seats out of the 59 seats it contested.

The Cock party has also lost it’s stronghold in the 10 Northern Angami-I Assembly Constituency as the sitting NPF MLA Khriehu Liezietsu was defeated by NDPP candidate Dr.Kekhrielhoulie Yhome by a margin of 1,690.

On the other hand, NPF Secretary General Achumbemo Kikon contesting for the fourth time from 40 Bhandari A/C defeated sitting BJP MLA and National Spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon by a margin of 3,582.

NPF Legislature Party leader Azo Nienu also retained it’s seat in 21 Phek A/C with a close margin of 48 votes against it’s rival NDPP candidate Kupoto Khesoh.

Other political parties like NPP have secured a good number of seats comparatively to the 2018 elections where it had won only 2 seats and 2023 witnessed 5 seats, RPI (Athawale) and LJP (Ram Vilas) won 2 seats each, while Independent candidates bagged 4 seats and JD(U) with 1 seat.

However, Congress which has lost its significance in the state in the last 20 years, has not registered a single win even this election.

The incumbent Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio registered easy victory from his 11 Northern Angami- II seat. Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Yanthungo Patton from 37 Tyui, former Chief Minister TR.Zeliand and Minister and State BJP president Temjen Imna Along have also retained their seats.
