The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the alleged use of force by police against students participating in a protest in New Delhi on July 20, describing the action as unacceptable in a democratic society.

In a statement, the Federation expressed concern over reports of baton charges, the use of tear gas and the alleged deployment of plainclothes personnel armed with lathis against unarmed students. It said the right to peaceful assembly and the freedom to voice legitimate grievances are fundamental democratic rights that should not be suppressed through violence or intimidation.

According to NSF, the students had assembled to demand accountability over issues affecting the future of millions of aspirants, including repeated competitive examination paper leaks and the need for greater transparency, fairness and integrity in recruitment and examination systems.

Reaffirming its commitment to meritocracy, transparency, accountability and fairness in all selection and recruitment processes, the Federation said the aspirations of hardworking students should never be compromised by systemic failures, corruption or administrative negligence.

The Federation expressed solidarity with all students who participated in the peaceful protest and conveyed its concern and prayers for those who were reportedly injured during the police action, wishing them a speedy recovery. It stated that students advocating for justice and institutional reforms deserve respect rather than repression.

NSF further urged the authorities to address the legitimate concerns raised by students regarding examination integrity, transparency and systemic reforms through meaningful dialogue instead of coercive measures.
