NWA calls on Chief Minister Rio, deliberates several projects on promoting Naga Wrestling

The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA), on August 26, called on the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio at his official residential Office and apprised him of the NWA plans, programs and activities and sought his kind intervention, support and cooperation towards the promotion of wrestling activities in the state and beyond.

According to a press statement issued by NWA Joint Secretary, Kuzhovesa Soho, the NWA apprised the Chief Minister of the Association’s plan to impart wrestling training and coaching camps to other non-participating wrestling tribes/communities of both Naga Style, national styles and other international wrestling styles. The camp is expected to be held in the month of September and October this year under phase wise manner.

The main objective Is to provide platform to the young potential youth to move forward and join the mainstream of the Naga wrestling fraternity and also motivate them to partake in the forthcoming International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship in December 2024, and also the Open Naga Wrestling Championship tentatively to be held in the last part of February 2025.

The statement further added that organizing separate state level Naga wrestling championship for the non-wrestling participating communities after the Open Naga Wrestling championship 2025 was also in the agenda of the NWA.

The NWA further shared of its plan to organize the 17th International Hornbill Naga Wrestling 2024 to a higher standard which will be collaborated with the 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival 2024. This year’s event will invite wrestlers from mainland India and abroad. The NWA also proposed to organized the championship at Khuochiezie depending upon the feasibility of the situation. During the meeting, the NWA also proposed the idea of organizing the Asian Belt Wrestling Championship 2024 tentatively slated in November this year to be hosted by the State Government of Nagaland. Construction of the State wrestling Stadium and construction of NWA office were among other issues discussed with the Chief Minister during the meeting.

“The NWA expressed its gratitude to the Chief Minister for the patient hearing to the NWA and also giving green signal to the Association proposals and the Association look forward of his support, guidance and help to take forward the wrestling event to a higher level,” mentioned the press statement.

Appreciating the proposal of reaching out to the wrestling to non-partcipating wrestling communities, Rio further assured to help and support the NWA in its upcoming endeavors in all possible ways. The NWA team was led by its President Vivolie Kezo, while Minister for Power & Parliamentary Affairs KG Kenye and Advisor CAWD & Taxes Kudecho Khamo were also present during the meeting.
