The Peren District Congress Committee (PDCC), in collaboration with the organising committee, successfully conducted a two-day futsal tournament on the theme “Empowering Youth Through Sports” at The Ball Park, Jalukie Town, Peren district, on October 23 and 24.

Dr Tumda Newme, former PCC member and former Independent candidate from the 6-Tening Assembly Constituency, graced the inaugural programme on October 23 as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Newme said Peren district was blessed with immense talent, but talent without opportunity went to waste. He observed that young people did not lack skills but needed platforms to showcase their abilities.

He said the tournament was not merely about football, but also about encouraging young people to stay away from drugs and focus on sports and education.

Chusi Hieme, Advisor to the PDCC, and Kiepeube Zehuny, Vice-President of the PDCC, graced the semi-final matches on October 24 as chief patrons.

The closing ceremony was hosted by Kutoho Chishi, President of the Dimapur District Congress Committee (DCC), who attended as the guest of honour. Officials of DCC Dimapur, the Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress (NPYC) president, the Minority Department chairman of Nagaland and other PCC leaders were also present.

In his address, Chishi said the Congress had remained silent in many parts of the State for more than 23 years and called for introspection. He questioned what the present government had delivered to Peren during the intervening period, adding that the district’s young people were natural athletes and champions who needed recognition and government support.

The organisers stated that the tournament aimed to promote youth empowerment, unity, discipline and sportsmanship. They expressed gratitude to the leaders and supporters whose presence, patronage and guidance contributed to the successful conduct of the event.
