Potato cultivation in Zunheboto shows encouraging results, says KVK

Zunheboto: KVK provides 8000 kg of quality potato seeds in four villages covering 65 farmer families

The Kufri Jyoti variety of potato has appeared to be highly suitable for the hilly terrain in Zunheboto, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nagaland University, Lumami stated. The observation was made by Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, Principal Scientist and Head, KVK Zunheboto and his team when they visited some potato fields recently to assess the growth and production performance.

KVK in collaboration with IARI (Indian Agriculture Research Institute) New Delhi had introduced Kufri Jyoti variety of potato for large scale demonstration in the district. KVK informed that it had provided 8000 kg of quality potato seeds in four villages in Zunheboto district covering 65 farm families.

It added that the average yield is around 12.5 tonnes/hectare and a gross income of Rs. 3,60,000 per hectare is expected.

A farmer named Hetoye from Keltomi Village said that he is happy with the cultivation and that he has not yet faced any problems with the variety of the potato. He further said that other farmers are also encouraged by the looking at his potato fields and many have expressed their willingness to cultivate it in the next season.
