The North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA), in collaboration with the District Administration and Pungro Town Council (PTC), organised a seminar on source segregation, waste management, slaughter practices and meat handling for local butchers at the Badminton Stadium, Pungro, on September 25.

The programme was chaired by NEIDA Cluster Manager Lakhum.

During the seminar, Longso of NEIDA made a presentation on the prevention of African Swine Fever (ASF), with emphasis on clean and hygienic practices in slaughtering and pork retail operations.

Alimsula, Veterinary Field Assistant (VFA), shared information on disease surveillance, timely vaccination, early detection and reporting, active herd monitoring, zoning and movement controls.

The seminar also provided an opportunity for local butchers to share their experiences and participate in discussions on slaughter and meat-handling practices.

The importance of source segregation was highlighted by Belenso T Yimkhiung, MIS, PTC, who explained that waste should be segregated into wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special-care waste.

He said proper segregation would help improve recycling, protect sanitation workers and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The programme concluded with participants taking the Swachhata Hi Seva pledge.
