The Rengma Nthenyi Literature Board, Chunlikha, launched the Rengma Nthenyi Academy at the NRCF Building, Chunlikha, on August 25, with MLA and Chairman, DPDB Tseminyu, Ar Jwenga Seb, as the Special Guest.

Addressing the gathering, Jwenga Seb underscored the importance of preserving and promoting mother tongues, describing language as an essential part of identity. He said, “My dialect, my identity,” emphasising that a community’s language tells others who they are and where they come from.

He encouraged the younger generation to learn and master their own dialect, stating that a strong foundation in one’s mother tongue can also help in learning other languages such as English, Hindi and Nagamese. He compared knowledge of one’s language and culture to planting a large tree whose shade and fruits can benefit future generations.

Jwenga Seb congratulated the Rengma Nthenyi Literature Board for launching the Academy and said the initiative had created an important legacy for coming generations to learn their language and culture, including reading and writing in Nthenyi.

Referring to the two distinct Rengma dialects, Nzonkhwen and Nthenyi, he said the existence of two dialects could provide greater advantages if used positively for the preservation and development of Rengma language and culture.

The programme was chaired by the Board’s Secretary, Dr Shasinlo Magh, while the welcome address was delivered by Khinyi Woch, Chairman, Rengma Nthenyi Literature Board, Chunlikha.

Woch highlighted the systematic development of the Nthenyi dialect over the years, culminating in the establishment of the Academy. He noted that the Nthenyi language was recognised by the Government of Nagaland in 2017 and had since made significant progress in keeping pace with the development of other languages in the State.

Rev Tusaya Kath pronounced the dedicatory prayer, while the Youth Ministry Choir of Kithagha Union Baptist Church presented a special number.

The programme also witnessed the launch of the prospectus of the Rengma Nthenyi Academy. Shelepfü Kath, Language Assistant, Rengma Nthenyi, was also presented with a Proficiency Certificate in recognition of his dedication and contribution towards the development of Nthenyi literature.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Lephizo Ghaponza, Member of the Board.
