Mokokchung: Showcases local and national artistry

The State Handloom Expo (SHE) – Hathkargha Mela which commenced at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung, was inaugurated by A Temjen Jamir, Director of Industries and Commerce, accompanied by officials from the Mokokchung district administration and Ao Senden on February 2.

 

Organized by the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, Government of Nagaland and sponsored by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the expo will conclude on February 15.

Featuring 60 stalls, including 40 from Nagaland and others from Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, as well as various mainland Indian states, the event showcases handicrafts, handlooms, home furnishings, Banasar carpets, rugs, and diverse products from participating states.

A significant aspect highlighted by the Director of Industries and Commerce is the expo’s focus on local participation, with 40 percent of the stalls designated for artisans from mainland India. Expressing gratitude to the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for facilitating a recent National Handloom Expo, Jamir emphasized the event’s role in spotlighting the artistry of local artisans and weavers.

Furthermore, the expo aims to promote the customization of traditional products for enhanced marketing opportunities, as suggested by the Director. Asenla Walling, Executive Engineer and Programme Officer for Textiles, Department of Industries and Commerce, underscored the event’s exclusive dedication to promoting the talents of local artisans and weavers.
