Summer Paris Olympics concludes; PM hails Indian contingent

The closing ceremony of the Summer Paris Olympics 2024 commenced as Thomas Bach, IOC President accompanied by Leon Marchand, French swimmer icon and the athletes, extinguished the Olympic cauldron declaring the 33rd Summer games officially closed.

The closing ceremony concluded on August 11, 2024, in Stade de France after a remarkable performance of various athletes from around the globe, culminating over 19 days. A number of 10,000 athletes paraded through the Stade de France, north of Paris. The Indian contingent was led by Manu Bhaker and PR Sreejesh as the co-torch-bearers, stated a press release from the olympics.com website.

The closing ceremony witnessed the audience of over 70,000 people whereby a variant of fireworks, art, dance and music followed. Phoenix and Kavinsky performed in the stadium while Thomas Bach, President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organising Committee gave out speeches.

The ceremony ended with the performance of Tom Cruise, Hollywood Superstar jumping out of a plane with the Olympic flag, as Red Hot Chilli Peppers played, marking its hand over to LA28 Olympics. The ceremony also saw vibrant performances from Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and H.E.R following the handover to LA28 for the 34th edition of the Summer Games. The Summer Olympics 2028 will be hosted by Los Angeles making it the third time in history.

Following the conclusion of the games, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the efforts put in by the Indian contingent. He lauded the Indian athletes, calling them heroes and wished them luck for their future endeavours.

On the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi posted, “As the Paris #Olympics conclude, I appreciate the efforts of the entire Indian contingent through the games. All the athletes have given their best and every Indian is proud of them. Wishing our sporting heroes the best for their upcoming endeavours”

Additionally, on the said platform, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of Labour & Employment; Youth Affairs and Sports, also congratulated the athletes for their efforts, “As the curtains fall on the spectacular #ParisOlympics2024, the vibrant Indian contingent, led by the remarkable @realmanubhaker and @16Sreejesh have made the nation proud with their dedication and spirit.”
