Minister for Higher Education and Tourism, Temjen Imna Along on Thursday urged students to make the most of their university years by developing knowledge, confidence and character and preparing themselves to contribute meaningfully to society and the nation.

Along was speaking as Chief Guest at the Orientation Programme–2026 of the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM), held at the Central Auditorium of the university.

Addressing the newly enrolled students, the Minister underlined the importance of education in shaping individuals as well as society. He encouraged them to remain committed to learning, use their time constructively and develop the confidence and character needed to face future challenges.

He also emphasised the responsibility of young people to prepare themselves to contribute positively to the future of the region and the country.

The orientation programme provided an opportunity for the new students to familiarise themselves with the USTM community, its values and the academic and developmental opportunities available to them. The programme also highlighted the importance of holistic development alongside academic excellence.

USTM Chancellor and Chairman, ERDF, Mahbubul Hoque, delivered the welcome address and extended greetings to the Chief Guest and newly enrolled students.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by USTM Vice Chancellor Prof G. D. Sharma.

Established in 2011, USTM is the first state private university in Science and Technology in Northeast India. The university received an ‘A Grade’ accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its first assessment cycle in 2021.

USTM stated that it remains committed to excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement, with emphasis on inclusivity, sustainability and regional development.
