Tourist cottage in Nagaland’s Mopungchuket Village devastated by lightning strike

Mokokchung: Tourist cottages in Longrangtenem Park a serene escape from hustle and bustle of city life

In a tragic turn of events, a tourist cottage located in the Longrangtenem Park of Mopungchuket village, nestled in the heart of Nagaland’s Mokokchung district, was reduced to ashes on the night of 12 September 2023. Preliminary investigations suggest that the devastating fire was ignited by a powerful lightning strike that occurred around 11:00 PM, leaving nothing but charred remains by the morning of September 13.

In a letter the Director, Department of Tourism, Mopungchuket Community Tourism Society (MCTS) stated that Longrangtenem Park, is one of the two community-owned parks in Mopungchuket Village and the destroyed cottage was one of the four nestled within the confines of this gated park, cherished by both locals and tourists alike.

Longrangtenem Park, renowned for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, houses a cluster of tourist cottages that attract visitors seeking a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

They stated that the unfortunate incident struck as Mopungchuket village was gearing up for the upcoming tourist season, which typically witnesses an influx of travellers from October to December. However, the Mopungchuket Community Tourism Society (MCTS), the authorized body overseeing all tourism activities in this popular rural destination, has promptly assessed the situation and is committed to ensuring that the incident does not disrupt the forthcoming tourist season.

Despite the loss of one of its cherished cottages, Mopungchuket village remains resolute in its determination to provide visitors with a memorable and enriching experience amidst the lush beauty of Longrangtenem Park. Authorities are already in the process of evaluating the damages and charting out a plan for the swift restoration of the tourist cottage.
