The Directorate of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Department of Legal Metrology, Government of India, conducted a one-day training programme for all Nagaland Legal Metrology Officers at Hotel Japfu, Kohima on May 29.
Special Guest, Wonchio Odyuo, NCS, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LM&CP), stressed the need for transition from traditional systems to modern digital technologies in the field of legal metrology.
The Secretary said the department plays a very important role despite facing shortage of manpower and the challenge of keeping pace with rapidly evolving technologies.
Speaking on the theme “Strengthening of Legal Metrology with New Technical Developments,” Wonchio Odyuo said the world is now moving rapidly towards digitalisation and stressed that departments must adapt to the changing technological landscape.
He highlighted that many systems, including smart monitoring devices, digital weighing scales and billing systems, are now becoming digitised, bringing greater accuracy, efficiency and transparency in operations. According to him, digital systems help minimise human error and improve monitoring and verification processes both at the district and headquarters levels.
The Secretary further noted that the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and e-commerce has transformed trade and transactions, making them faster and more efficient. He pointed out that legal metrology measures are increasingly important in digital trade to ensure consumers receive correct quantity, pricing and proper product declarations during online transactions.

Urging officers to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills, he said keeping pace with technological advancements is essential for effective implementation of legal metrology standards and consumer protection mechanisms in the State.
Dr Rakesh Joshi, Deputy Director, Legal Metrology and Head of RRSL Guwahati, Government of India, attended the programme as the resource person and delivered the keynote address. He also led the technical session on new technical developments and strengthening of legal metrology practices.
The technical session was moderated by Ngangshimakok, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Dimapur. Officers participated in discussions and feedback sessions focusing on improving enforcement mechanisms, technical efficiency and consumer protection measures in the State.
The programme concluded with concluding remarks by Chullen Chang, Assistant Controller, LM&CP Tuensang, followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Shiloh Kath, Deputy Controller, LM&CP.
Earlier, the inaugural session was chaired by Shiekhozo, Assistant Controller HQ, LM&CP. Additional Controller & HoD, LM&CP Nagaland, Limatoshi Jamir delivered the welcome address.
