The Watsu Mungdang, the apex women’s organisation of the Ao community, has defended former Nagaland Chief Minister and former Governor, Dr SC Jamir’s right to speak on the Naga political issue, asserting that the issue belongs to every Naga.

In a statement issued by Tianaro Jamir, President, and T Narola Longchar, General Secretary, the organisation said every Naga, irrespective of political affiliation, organisation, profession or position, has the right to express views on matters concerning the Naga people and their future and no individual or organization can claim exclusive ownership over the right to discuss it.

The Watsu Mungdang said it had taken note of the recent public discourse surrounding Jamir’s statement on the Naga political issue and questions raised over his right to speak on the matter.

“Differences of opinion are natural in any democratic discourse and should be addressed through dialogue and reasoned discussion,” it said.

The organisation condemned the statements of NSCN(IM) leaders, VS Atem and RH Raising questioning Jamir’s right to speak on the issue. It also condemned the statement of MLA Achumbemo Kikon, alleging that it humiliated Jamir, whom it described as continuing to work for the Nagas.

The Watsu Mungdang urged all Nagas, irrespective of political affiliation, background or ideology, to exercise their legitimate right to contribute to public discourse without fear of intimidation or being delegitimised.
