Wokha Police unearth inter-state car theft racket, arrests kingpin

Wokha: Gang carry out recce to identify cars, steal it at night and transport to Manipur via Kohima and Peren route

The Wokha Police have unearthed a car theft racket and arrested the kingpin of the gang that is involved in stealing cars in Nagaland and other North Eastern States. In this connection, the Police have arrested Joseph Sareng from Ukhrul, the leader of the gang, along with three of his accomplices who are also from Manipur.

The investigation began when the Wokha Police Station received a written complaint of a stolen vehicle on 7th September 2022. An enquiry was made and eventually a person named Zubemo Ngullie was arrested. On examination, Ngullie confessed to the crime and further informed that he had disposed the said vehicle to one person namely Joseph, a resident of Dimapur, the Police stated. Upon further interrogation, the person revealed “the big inter-state vehicle theft racket involving other accomplices some based in Nagaland and others in Manipur.”

On 16th December 2023, on receipt of a tip-off from reliable sources about another transaction of stolen vehicles at Mao gate side in Manipur, a well-coordinated plan between Kohima DEF, Wokha DEF and Manipur Police was orchestrated to nab the accomplices involved in the racket and with the assistance and direction of PHQ Nagaland, the Police said.

In the operation, Joseph and three of his accomplices- Kephugam, Sanjoy and Mayonsing Lunglen – were arrested at Tadubi Town, Senapati, Manipur and brought to Wokha Police Station.

The Wokha Police informed that after detailed interrogation, the arrested persons revealed the modus operandi of the car theft racket and the gang found involved in stealing scores of vehicles from different part of Nagaland and other North Eastern States. The investigation also revealed that Joseph and his gang would carry out a recce to identify the cars and on clearance, steal it at night and would transport the stolen vehicles to Manipur via Kohima and Peren route.

On further interrogation, arrested accused Joseph Sareng was found involved in many other criminal cases, the Police added. The case has been registered at Wokha Police Station.
