The Traffic Control Unit, Wokha, intensified its enforcement drive and public awareness campaign in Wokha town on Wednesday, conducting surprise checks on two-wheeler riders for helmet violations and clamping vehicles parked in restricted areas.

Speaking to the media, Traffic In-Charge N Eyingo Lotha said that despite repeated awareness programmes and warnings, many motorists continued to disregard traffic regulations.

During the checks, several two-wheeler riders were found travelling without helmets, while some were also found carrying passengers beyond the permitted limit.

Lotha said first-time offenders were fined ₹1,000 and issued warnings, while repeat offenders would face stiffer penalties, including legal action and imprisonment under applicable provisions.

He also cautioned parents and others involved in school transportation against carrying children beyond the permitted passenger limit on two-wheelers.

The traffic official expressed concern over obstructions along the National Highway passing through Wokha town, particularly construction materials dumped along roadsides and vehicles parked improperly, which he said were hampering the smooth movement of traffic.

He said a joint inspection conducted earlier by the district administration, police and traffic department had already issued directives for removal of such obstructions. If those responsible failed to comply, the authorities might be compelled to initiate enforcement measures to clear them, he added.

Lotha said traffic clamps were also being used against vehicles found parked in restricted zones as part of efforts to enforce traffic regulations.

Appealing to the public to remain vigilant and law-abiding, he expressed particular concern over incidents of underage driving in the district.

Lotha reminded citizens that driving by minors is a punishable offence and warned that strict action would be taken against violators.
