Women mock parliament debate under SVEEP held at Wokha District

The Systematic Voter’s Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), Women Mock Parliament Debate on “Men dictate the vote and voice of Naga Women” was held at DC Conference Hall on  February 22. The programme was organized by DC & DEO, Wokha in collaboration with the Lotha Eloe Hoho and the District Hub for Empowerment of Women.

During the programme, K. Furhesie, NCS ADC, Wokha in his address said that SVEEP is the flagship programme of the Election Commission of India for Voter Education aiming to educate the voter by spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy in India. He also asserted that it is a multi- intervention programme that reaches out through different votes and media to educate citizens.

He emphasized that the vision of SVEEP is to enlighten, Enable and Power every citizens and that this is one such activity has been undertaken under SVEEP to educate the citizens with special focus. He also informed that the first stage of SVEEP called SVEEP 1 started in the year 2009 and currently is in the fourth stage that is the SVEEP 4 which started in 2022 and will continue till 2025. Stating that each stage has its own objectives, Furhesie highlighted the two objectives of SVEEP 4 which has to be undertaken. The first one includes  increase the voters turn out to 75 percent in the coming Lok Sabha Election 2024 and purify the electoral roll in every polling station while the second one includes to encourage the young voters for participation in this electoral. He also urged all the young students to be prepared and actively get enrolled.

Later, a debate competition on “Men dictate the vote and voice of Naga Women” was conducted where two teams consisting of five members participated. The debate revolved around Gender Equality. The competition was judged under the criteria on presentation of theory & information, use of language, discipline and clarity of speech.

The team against Motion was declared the winner of the Debate competition and walked away with cash prize, gift and certificates. The other team were also presented with gifts and certificates.

The debate was moderated by Thungbeni Kikon, Case worker, OSC and the panel of Judges was Julia Achumi, Principal Doyang Polytechnic, Mhonbeni Ezong, PGT GHSS and Khyopenthung Tsopoe, Associate professor MTC.

Mount Tiyi College students attended the programme which was chaired by Merithung Lotha ( Gender specialist, DHEW).
