KOHIMA
In commemoration of World Environment Day 2024, the Sustainable Development Goals Coordination Centre (SDGCC) under the Department of Planning & Transformation organised a ‘Greening the Earth’ initiative by planting tree saplings at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima, on 5 June, 2024 informed DIPR.
Nayantara Sasikumar, IES, OSD (Planning) & SDG Nodal Officer during the event said that the key objective of this initiative is to highlight our commitment and mobilise collective action towards addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. Nayantara also emphasised the urgency of planting more trees and increasing greenery as our State is witnessing the increasing frequency and severity of heat waves including landslides, storms, floods, droughts, biodiversity loss, and health issues.
She further stressed on the need to take action towards restoring the land and added that each tree we plant today represents a crucial step towards reversing the environmental damage inflicted and called upon every individual to commit to lifelong environmental stewardship and pledge to reduce our carbon footprint.
Sasikumar also highlighted the importance of SDG 12 i.e Sustainable Consumption and Production for protecting the environment. She expressed gratitude to the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change for providing the plant saplings to SDGCC to carry forward the ‘Greening the Earth’ initiative.

ZUNHEBOTO
The District Administration, Zunheboto in collaboration with District Election Office observed ‘World Environment Day’ under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” Land Slogan “Our Land, Our Future: we are generation restoration,” at Town Square, Zunheboto on 5th June, 2024.
Before the formal programme, NBSE commemorated 50 years of its existence with the aim to create awareness of a healthier environment. The Department of Schools Education in collaboration with DFO (Forest) organised Half Marathon where the winners were felicitated at the programme.
Winning schools of the ‘Rid Plastic’ inter School Competition, Seven Homes School, Government Higher Secondary School, Zunheboto and Government High School (South point) were felicitated with cash awards by ZTC in the function.
Further, the celebration continued with large scale Plantation and Cleanliness Drive across the town headed by Rahul Bhanudas Mali (IAS), Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto, with Superintendent of Police, DFO, other concerned government offices, NGOs, Student bodies and Zunheboto District Badminton Association.

WOKHA
Wokha district also celebrated World Environment day on 5th June, 2024 at Lotha Hoho Ki, Wokha. The programme was organised by Wokha Forest Division and Doyang Planting Division in collaboration with Nagaland Board of School Education.
Rajiv Shankar IFS, Assistant Conservator of Forests, delivering the key note address said, to maintain a balance ecosystem we need to safeguard natural world by way of environment conservation, safeguard different species of animals, trees which can help to minimise environmental degradation and pollution which can help promote sustainable future for planet.
Suman W. M Sivachar (IFS), Divisional Forest Officer Wokha & Doyang, emphasised on the important aspect on conservation of our environment and biodiversity where he stated, “protection, preservation and restoration of ecosystem and natural resources are the critical aspect of sustainability to ensure long term wellbeing of both humans and the planet.”
Speaking on the occasion was also Anuranjan Singh, Skill Development Officer, who encouraged the students’ to spread awareness about environment conservation, and added that one’s role in spreading message will not only have an impact within the family but will have a greater impact in the society as well.
A short story on the importance of Mt. Tiyi was presented by Longtsu Tungoe. Highlights of the programme included folk story telling competition and folk song competition. Around 11 schools from Wokha town took part in the competition.
Earlier in the day, “Walk For Awareness” was held for the students which saw the participation from different schools under Wokha town. The walk was held under the Slogan “Our Land, Our future, We are Generation Restoration.”
LONGKHIM
In Longkhim, World Environment Day was observed at GHSS, and Private Schools under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Draught Resilience” on 5th June, 2024.
Marking the day the Students and Teachers from different Schools conducted Social work at their respective Schools, and carried out plantation drive at school, premises and alongside the road.
