The Assam Rifles, the oldest paramilitary force in India, was raised under the name ‘Cachar Levy’ under the British Raj in 1835 to protect tea gardens and fertile plains of Assam against unruly tribes. The present name ‘Assam Rifles’ has been used only since 1917.

Today, there are 46 battalions of Assam Rifles with a sanctioned strength of over 63,000 personnel.

The AR is also dubbed as “Sentinels of the North East” and “Friends of the Hill People”.
