1 person goes missing every 4th day, Addl SP Wokha says on human trafficking in Nagaland

Wokha: Soriso recommends raising awareness as effective means to end to human trafficking

Additional Superintendent of Police Wokha, K Soriso, while highlighting on human trafficking in Nagland, revealed that one person goes missing every fourth day. He also informed that among the 87 cases of missing persons registered in the past 3 years (2017-19) from different districts across the state, 83% were below the age of 18 years.

K Soriso was speaking on the theme of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2023 ‘Reach Every Woman of Trafficking: Leave No One Behind’ at GHSS Wokha Auditorium, Wokha district on 30 July 2023, a DIPR report stated.

The Addl SP defined human trafficking as the transfer, harboring, or transportation of people through force, fraud, or deception with the aim of exploiting them for profit. He highlighted some of the reasons behind trafficking, citing poverty, the pursuit of a better life, supporting families, and seeking job opportunities as contributing factors.

Soriso emphasized the need to combat human trafficking through awareness, institutional capacity building, training of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and judges, as well as the enactment of relevant legislation and strengthening anti-trafficking measures. He also recommended raising awareness as an effective means to put an end to this menace.

Short speeches were delivered by representatives from Lotha Eloe Hoho and other civil society organizations. The key-note address was proposed by SDO (C) Nuhuta Tunyi, and the function was chaired by Thungbeni Kikon, Case Worker OSC. Dr. Wonchano Enny, DCM, DHEW, delivered the vote of thanks.

The program was organized by Wokha District Administration, District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) and Sakhi- One Stop Centre under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao in convergence with Wokha Police and  Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA).
