The Meitei women movement ‘Meira Paibi’ which is under much public scrutiny for its role in the prevailing unrest in Manipur, has called for 48 hours statewide bandh on Tuesday and Wednesday demanding for the release of five individuals who were apprehended by the Manipur Police on 16 September 2023 from Imphal East district.

On 17 September, in a statement, the state’s police had informed about the arrest of five persons with sophisticated weapons in camouflage uniform on charges of “extortion threats, misuse of police uniform and impersonation by armed miscreants.” Manipur Police had also said that following the arrest, a mob, reportedly involving Meira Paibis, attempted “to storm into Porompat PS demanding release of the arrested persons”, compelling the joint security forces to fire tear gas.

The police had also asserted its determination “to carry on such raids/ operations and make all out efforts to bring peace and normalcy in the State.” It also appealed to the general public to refrain from such protest and co-operate with the law enforcement agencies.

Soon after the Meira Paibis called for the bandh in Manipur on Monday, the police again posted the same statement in its social media platforms.
