7 year old drowned, 73 years old crushed to death in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and ensuing monsoon season: NSDMA

A seven years old boy was drowned in Laruri village, Meluri while a 73 years old was crushed to death by a falling retaining wall in Rekizu ward, Pfutsero, informed the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) today in a press release.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal and the ensuing monsoon season the NSDMA, Home Department updated on the reports received of vast damages across the State. On May 25, nine households in Chuchuyimlang village under Mokokchung district was severely affected by heavy windstorm. In Noksen subdivision under Tuensang district, 36 households were severely damaged by windstorm on May 24. In a belated report received, a house was completely damaged in Awotsakili village under Zunheboto district.

A seven year old boy was drowned at Laruri village under Meluri subdivision, while another drowning incident was reported from Doyang dam under Wokha district.

“The National Disaster Response Force has been deployed to take up the search and rescue, mention may be made that for the first time in the history of the State, an under-water drone is being deployed by the NSDMA for the same. The search & rescue mission comprising of the NDRF, SDRF, DDMA Wokha and local volunteers is still underway at the time of filing this report,” stated Lhouchalie Viya, IAS Commissioner & Secretary to the Govt. of Nagaland

A mudslide caused by incessant rains has also been reported from Kikruma village under Phek district.

In Kiphire district, damages to public infrastructure and households by incessant rains has been reported on May 28.

“The NSDMA is still compiling damage reports at the time of filing this report. The NSDMA requests the District Disaster Management Authorities and the line departments to be alert and vigilant as the monsoon season approaches the State,” stated the press release. Further, the NSDMA has requested the public to refrain from fishing, picnicking etc during the monsoon season.
