The 54th Wrestling Meet 2026, organised by the Angami Sports Association, was inaugurated on February 20 at Khuochiezie Local Ground, Kohima.

Speaking as the special guest, Kevipodi Sophie, MLA and Chairman of the DPDB Kohima, said that Naga wrestling remains one of the most revered sports among the Nagas.

Acknowledging the contributions of pioneers, former wrestlers, and enthusiasts who have safeguarded the tradition, he noted that the sport once played a significant role in resolving disputes within the community.

He encouraged participants who may face defeat to work harder and return stronger, emphasising that sportspersons today have wider opportunities to excel and build sustainable careers, including through sports quotas in government services.

Sophie also called for unity among the Angamis, referring to factionalism within Naga society. He urged the four ranges to stand together and support one another at all times, while also stressing the need to reflect on ways to strengthen the local economy.

Delivering the welcome address, ASA President Ruokuovikho Chale described Naga wrestling as a respected traditional sport of the Angami Nagas and encouraged participants to take pride in the discipline, even in defeat. He also urged lovers of the indigenous sport to continue supporting efforts to preserve its legacy.

Special presentations were made by Visetuo Chüpuo and Ruokuoseü Sanchu. The programme was earlier blessed with an invocation by Rev. Razouvizo Tetso, Chairman, ACRCC.

ASA Wrestling Secretary Zapusazo Sirie administered the oath to the participants.
