The State Convention of the Nagaland National Pension System Government Service Employees Forum (NNPSGSEF) concluded successfully at State Academy Hall, Kohima, on Saturday with participation from members and representatives of various departments and service associations across Nagaland.

In his address, NNPSGSEF State President, Avizo Nienu spoke extensively on the Forum’s sustained efforts regarding family pension issues under NPS, particularly in cases of deceased employees.

He stated that the Forum had received numerous grievances from families receiving minimal family pensions—sometimes as low as Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per month—after the death of husband or wife or father/mother.

The Forum had submitted multiple representations to the State Government, highlighting the hardships faced by such families, he informed.

Expressing gratitude to the Government of Nagaland, he acknowledged the recent Office Memorandum issued by the Finance Department on February 24, 2026, describing it as a milestone achievement and a significant relief for NPS employees. He noted that while similar provisions existed earlier, including a 2012 notification, they were not effectively implemented.

He termed the recent development as the outcome of collective unity and sustained engagement and expressed hope that the government would soon issue clear directives and procedural guidelines for implementation.

Nienu also reiterated the Forum’s long-standing demand for scrapping the NPS and restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). He stated that representations submitted in this regard have not received a response so far.

Describing OPS as not merely an economic issue but a moral one, he argued that pension security ensures dignity and stability for retirees. He questioned the sustainability of a system where retirement savings are linked to market performance and urged policymakers to engage in constructive dialogue.

He called upon leaders to explore solutions, including possible hybrid models, to balance fiscal sustainability with social security, while emphasizing urgency and empathy in addressing employees’ concerns.

“The government that finds money for statues, festivals, singing, dance, new constructions, new projects and schemes etc. suddenly becomes bankrupt when it comes to restoring our pension rights,” he said.

“Let us tell the government with one thunderous voice: Your silence will not break us- it will only make us stronger,” he said adding the government of the day has changed the meaning of good governance with its total silence.

The programme was attended by Achuytananda Hazarika, Convener of the North East Government Employees Welfare Federation (NEGEWF), as Special Attendee.

Messages of solidarity were received from associations including Confederation of All Nagaland State Services Employees Association (CANSSEA), Nagaland Civil Service Association (NCSA) and Federation of Nagaland State Engineering Service Association (FONSESA), among others. Advisors of NNPSGSEF also addressed the gathering, urging members to remain disciplined, informed and united.

The convention culminated in the adoption of key resolutions reaffirming the Forum’s commitment to safeguarding the interests and future security of government employees under the National Pension System (NPS).

All NPS members resolved to remain firmly united—both physically and financially—in advancing the objectives of the Forum. The resolution emphasized that unity represents collective strength, shared responsibility, mutual trust and an unwavering commitment to the common cause of pension security and employee welfare.

The House further resolved that if any office bearer faces service-related consequences or challenges arising from their role in the movement, all NPS members shall stand in unequivocal solidarity. The Forum committed to extending full moral, organizational and lawful support to protect the rights and dignity of its leaders.

Reaffirming its core objectives, the Convention resolved that all NPS employees shall remain steadfast in pursuing the Forum’s legitimate demands with firmness, discipline and lawful determination. The members pledged to persist collectively until their demands are duly and justly addressed by the competent authorities.
