The Office of the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, has issued a public advisory urging citizens travelling to Assam to exercise caution and strictly adhere to guidelines in view of the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) due to the ongoing election process in the neighbouring state.
According to the advisory, election authorities and law enforcement agencies in Assam have intensified surveillance and checking at inter-state borders and other strategic locations to ensure the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections. As a result, travellers may encounter increased scrutiny during transit.
The police noted that several instances have been reported where otherwise law-abiding citizens faced inconvenience due to lack of awareness regarding election-related restrictions. To avoid such situations, the public has been advised to follow certain precautions while travelling.
Citizens have been cautioned against carrying large amounts of cash without valid proof, as it may lead to detention, questioning or even seizure by authorities. Similarly, those carrying valuables such as gold, silver or other high-value items have been advised to keep proper bills or invoices to avoid complications during checking.
The advisory further warned against carrying any political materials, including pamphlets, posters or campaign-related items, without proper authorization, as it could invite legal action under election laws.
Travellers have also been asked to remain prepared for thorough vehicle checks at multiple points and to cooperate fully with officials. Carrying valid identity proof and relevant documents has been emphasized as essential during such checks.
On the issue of security, the police reiterated that carrying arms or ammunition without valid licenses and necessary permissions is strictly prohibited and may lead to serious legal consequences.
The advisory underlined that the intent behind these measures is to safeguard innocent citizens from avoidable inconvenience while ensuring smooth and hassle-free travel during the election period.
The Dimapur Police has urged the public to stay informed and comply with all regulations while travelling to Assam until the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct remains in place.
